AndrOpen Office is the free Android version of the increasingly-popular Apache OpenOffice. This fork of the suite –as it is not an official app- includes all its six parts to its desktop software: Writer (text processor), Calc (spreadsheets utility), Impress (presentations manager), Draw (for drawings, as its name suggests), Math (equations editor) and Base (databases).
It includes all six parts to its desktop software: Writer, Calc , Impress , Draw , Math and Base
Even though AndrOpen Office is good news for this suite’s lovers, the fact is, criticism has not taken too long to surface. Some users claim it is not really practical in devices with small screens, as they say that the keyboard takes most part of the workplace, leaving almost no free space for the rest of the interface. However, this problem can be easily solved by using a physical (Bluetooth, for instance) keyboard.
Getting to know this app
After going through the download and setup process, you will see this application is capable of viewing and editing documents, exporting files in PDF and supporting embedded objects, passwords, digital signatures, macros, internationalization and localizations. A great feature of AndrOpen Office is that the interfaces of Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Math and Base do not change; they are exactly the same as the ones in the PC version.
AndrOpen Office incorporates specific shortcuts and controls exclusively made for optimizing the mobile experience. Also, this suite supports several languages and file formats, including DOC, XLS, PPT, TXT, PSD or PDF, amongst many others. However, the formats supported vary depending if you are importing or exporting the document. For example, it is possible to export as PDF, but not to import.
As we previously mentioned, this software includes its own motion events to enrich and optimize the performance. A single tap will be equivalent to clicking the left button while a double tap means double clicking. A long tap is just like clicking the right button of the mouse. Movement is made with drag and drop. Additionally, some particular actions of the suite have some gestures assigned, for instance pinching out hides buttons, pinching in shows them again. Forcing exit is as simple as long-tapping the X button. Regarding shortcuts, you can use them for common actions like Close, Save, Copy, Paste, Cut, Scroll (left, right, up and down), Move (left, right, up and down), Page Up or Down, etc.
