Audacity is an audio editing and recording open source program with a GNU GPL (General Public License). Developed in 1999 in Carnegie Mellon University, this download is cross-platform, multi-track, and available in more than fifty languages, and the options are expanding. Thanks to the comprehensive functionalities and price of Audacity, it was recognized as one of the top hundred products of 2008 by PC World.

With this freeware, you are able to record live, mono and stereo, and to edit and mix your own music. Audacity provides classic editing functions such as copy, cut, paste, and mix, change the pitch, add effects, etc. Audacity also enables the conversion of some audio formats, and to expand its options you can add more plug-ins.

Audacity is a recording studio, and it is available for Windows, Mac and GNU/Linux. Although it is quite functional, it is not so full-featured and visually appealing as the largest audio studio software, but Audacity is effective enough and easy to use, and has a very large number of users attesting to its popularity.

How to use

For Windows, Audacity offers three choices of interface: MME, Window DirectSound, and Windows WASAPI. These Interfaces differ mainly in latency and compatibility with audio devices. According to the developers' recommendations, the MME interface is a very complete option. You can work in multi-track and with multiple clips on each track. It supports most popular audio formats, and you can experiment with samples of 16-bit, 24-bit and 32-bit at the same time, and up to 192 KHz.

When you add speakers and headphones, Audacity supports Microsoft Sound Mapper as an output device. As a sound capture and input device, this download supports the internal microphone, Microsoft Sound Mapper, external microphone, and the Stereo Mixer. It means you can record from a microphone, a line-in, or you can even digitize cassette tapes, vinyl LPs or MiniDiscs.
